Lost Confidence As An Entrepreneur?

Have you lost confidence as an entrepreneur?

Business owners who have lost confidence as an entrepreneur make up a fair number of my clients at any one time. It’s a common situation for business owners and can be sparked by any number of things. Perhaps you’re going through a bad patch in your personal life and it’s impacting your self-confidence? Sometimes, a difficult client or losing a contract can knock you sideways. Even big picture economic changes can make us worry about the future, and cause a crisis of confidence. Occasionally, things from the past can creep up and affect us. This could be a comment our parent or old teacher made, or an episode of bullying.

In some cases, it may be that you now find yourself under the spotlight, and that’s bringing things up for you. Entrepreneurs who want to become more visible can sometimes find that it raises demons around being seen.

Building back confidence as a business owner

These are some of the things that can spark a crisis of self-esteem as a business owner, but how can we deal with them? How can we build back that confidence as a business owner?

One of the first things we can do is work out where it’s coming from. It might be a trauma that has set this off, or an old one resurfacing. If so, I use a gentle technique called Rewind which unhooks the strong emotions from the trauma. This allows us to move on and deal with whatever it is. It’s something I use very successfully with my work with veterans with PTSD.

It could be that there is something in your environment that is provoking this. An example of this would be a toxic relationship that is damaging your confidence.

Confidence work

Then we move onto building confidence. The best way to do this is by embedding new behaviours and building a feeling of control. This will mean different things to different people. Part of my job is to look at what that actually means for you and your business. As a business psychologist as well as therapist, I do a lot of profiling. This means we can hone in on what parts of the business really suit you and your personality. It might mean that your business needs a little tweaking, but I promise that it will do wonders for your confidence.

Even before I moved into psychology and therapy, I coached business owners around their marketing and PR. This inevitably meant working with them around confidence. I have been doing this a long time, even before the advent of social media!
