Dealing with Others’ Envy When You’re Successful

Emotional support for high-net-worth individuals navigating others’ envy

When you’ve built something meaningful, whether that’s a business, a legacy, or a beautiful life, you may find yourself facing something rarely discussed:  being envied. It can be unnerving to have to deal with envy when you’re succesful, but it’s also quite common.

It can show up as coolness in once-close relationships. Subtle judgment from extended family. Expectations that you’ll always foot the bill. Or a persistent sense that you have to make yourself smaller to stay connected.

Envy directed at you can be unsettling. If you’re someone who values connection and loyalty, it may feel especially painful.

Tell-tale signs you feel others’ envy

You notice yourself:

  • Holding back from sharing good news
  • Minimising your achievements in conversation
  • Overgiving in relationships to “compensate”
  • Feeling guilty or exposed when you succeed

For those living in the public eye or with generational wealth, this can be even more complex. The more you have, the more you may become a mirror for others’ feelings of lack, and that’s hard on everyone.

How therapy can help

Our first step might be to understand the patterns at play, and then look at your own boundaries and even identity. We might explore any early messages around success, worth, and humility. However, our main focus is on improving your experience in the here and now, as well as future. I’ll share tools that might help you manage relationships where envy is present, and, for those in the public eye, create a strategy that encompasses staying visible without feeling exposed.

This work can be especially powerful in couples therapy, where your different  experiences of success, envy, or guilt may be shaping the dynamic the relationship.

You don’t have to shrink to be loved and appreciated
