Career Change Into PR
Careers psychologist and coach, Paula Gardner, talks about using the theory of Possible Selves to explore a career change in PR. Are you are thinking about moving into PR, or changing career paths within in PR industry? Then this is a helpful way to approach it. It looks at a self-reflective approach that is grounded in the practical. Paula discusses how a career change is not just a change of job, but a change of identity. This takes time. She urges you to get out there and test out Possible Selves. You can do this through taking courses, returning to formal education, talking to people who already work in PR and comms, work experience, and shadowing. You can also seek out those people who are doing what you may be considering moving into.
Inspired by the theory, Paula explains why a career change into PR is more a matter of exploration and evolution, and less one of planning and strategy. The book she references is Herminia Ibarra’s Working Identity, and you can read the original paper on Possible Selves here.
