20 Sep Writing For Medium As Part of Your Content Strategy
Using the platform of Medium as part of your content strategy
If you don’t have a company blog already, the article based platform Medium can be a great way to share your ideas, build a reputation and attract an audience. It’s already up there at the top of the search engines so why not take advantage of that? It lets you post links to your own and other sites, and you can also build email lists too. There are a number of article based platforms out there which you could use. Thrive Global is another one for instance. However, we like Medium for its easy to use tools and sense of community, which can be useful if you are building a following from scratch.
What is Medium?
In the words of Wikipedia:
“Medium is an online publishing platform developed by Evan Williams and launched in August 2012. … The platform is an example of social journalism, having a hybrid collection of amateur and professional people and publications, or exclusive blogs or publishers on Medium, and is regularly regarded as a blog host”
Anyone can set up a Medium account in minutes and start writing. Of course, you might like to be a bit more strategic than that!
Earning Money Through Medium
When you publish through Medium you can choose one of two avenues. If you merely publish, your article will be visible within the search engines. It will be viewable to anyone who clicks on it. They can see the whole article plus your profile and link through to your website, email list, webinar sign up page or whatever you decide to promote (and you can change this).
You can also decide to join the partner programme. You will need to give Medium your Stripe account details (it takes you through the process of signing up if you don’t already have one). Once they these are validated, you can earn small amounts of money (we are talking cents here) every time someone reads your article. It’s a hard slog but there are people who earn a living through writing on Medium! Your article will still be in search engines and people will still see your links and profile. However, after reading three articles they will need to pay and join to read more that month.
The beauty of this is that you can build up a whole library of articles. Over time you can earn payments that grow as your archive grows.
Medium as part of your content strategy
Of course, our focus here is on why use Medium in the first place? How can it help you build your brand? There are a number of reasons.
- Your content builds your brand identity. Medium is a great way of getting it seen as it is ranked high within the search engines
- You can use it as your blogging platform if you do not have your own
- It is another profile and another link to your own website – another shop door so to speak
- You can create your own publications on Medium. Everyone that follows goes onto an email list that you can reach through a newsletter
- It is a simple and easy to use system that can be used by those with little or no knowledge of tech (although we will do a post on how to use Medium soon)
- You can include links within your articles and profile (within reason) to other output/sales pages/newsletter sign up pages.
